Goschwin Nickel

Goswin Nickel ( * 1582 in Jülich, † July 31, 1664 in Rome) was the 10th General of the Society of Jesus.

Life

Goswin Nickel was the son of the Jülich mayor Johann Nickel. He studied in Paderborn and Mainz (1611-1615), where he was ordained and on 28 October 1614 by a priest.

At times, Nickel worked as a provincial Order in which he, for example, in 1631 the monk Friedrich Spee supported, as it required him to revoke his complaint against the persecution of witches writing " Cautio Criminalis ". Recent research on the second edition of the book can even suspect that it, with the approval of the Provincial of the Rhenish province, so Father Goswin Nickel, appeared.

As only a few weeks after his election, the ninth General of the Order, Aloysius Gottifredi, died on 12 March 1652, the General Assembly on March 17, 1652 at their 10th General nickel.

At his own request of the ailing General and with the express approval of Pope Alexander VII asked him the Order from June 7, 1661 Vicar General Gian Paolo Oliva aside; Nickel could still walk among other aged barely.

Goswin Nickel died on July 31, 1664 in Rome. He was succeeded by Giovanni Paolo Oliva.

In the birthplace Jülich a street is named after the monk. In addition, the Jülich artist Arno Schlader called his studio in Koslar de nickel barn.
