Gospels of St. Medard de Soissons

The so-called Gospel Book of Saint Médard in Soissons is a Carolingian illuminated manuscript that originated 827. This year, Louis the Pious and his wife gave Judith the Codex of Saint- Médard in Soissons. Probably the manuscript dates from the so-called " court school of Charlemagne " and emerged in the last years of Charles. She is regarded as the work of this school of painting.

The Gospel book comprises 239 parchment leaves, its format is 362 x 267 mm. The manuscript is illuminated with six full-page miniatures and 12 canon tables. The illustrations show a Maiestas Domini, four evangelists images, the Fountain of Life and the Adoration of the Lamb. The text of the magnificent manuscript is almost entirely written in golden uncial. The manuscript was brought to Paris in 1790 and is located in the 19th century in the Bibliothèque nationale ( Ms. Lat. 8850 ).
