Götaland theory

The Götaland theory ( Västgötaskolan ) states that the origins of the Swedish history were not located in Eastern Sweden, but in the southwestern region Götaland, more precisely, in Västergötland. This theory came up in the early 19th century and is still represented regionally, but never broad scientific acceptance.

During the period of German National Socialism, this theory influenced the Swedish archeology to a considerable extent. Background was the conviction of Nazi ideologues such as Walther Darré that Scandinavia and within Scandinavia Vastergotland was the " homeland " of the Germans.
