Gotarzes II of Parthia

Gotarzes II († 51 ) was a Parthian king, who reigned 38-51 AD. He followed Artabanus II to the throne, with whom he was apparently not related. He led the government along with his brother Vardanes who tried but early to displace Gotarzes II of the rule. However, in 40 AD, it came to an agreement and the brothers divided the Parthian Empire, which Gotarzes II received mainly in the northern provinces. However, it came to disputes between the two brothers, from which Gotarzes II emerged as the winner. Vardanes was murdered. Gotarzes II had then to fight with another anti-king: Meherdates. Finally he was able to defeat this, but did not kill him, but let him cut off the ears. The event was celebrated on a rock relief at Behistun. Gotarzes II died in 51
