Gothenburg Cathedral

The Cathedral of Gothenburg (Swedish: Göteborg domkyrka or Gustavi domkyrka ) is located in the center of the Swedish city of Gothenburg. It is the third cathedral on the same site. The first was inaugurated in 1633 in honor of King Gustav II Adolf, who was a year ago killed at the Battle of Lützen. She's Episcopal Church of the Diocese of Gothenburg.

The building

After the first two churches had fallen victim to fires, in 1804 started the construction of the current cathedral. The foundations of the old church could be used, but not all parts of today's cathedral correspond to the original ground plan. The drawings for the construction came from the architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg. As this died a year before the inauguration, the building was completed by his pupil Justus F. Weinberg. At the inauguration on May 21, 1815 by Bishop Johan Wingård the cathedral was not yet completed. The tower was inaugurated ten years later and only two years later this was complete.

The cathedral has been restored three times, 1904, 1954-1957 and 1983 until 1985.

Equipment

The organ was built in 1962 by the organ builder Magnussons Orgelbyggeri. The instrument is housed in a historic organ case from 1633. It has 46 registers on three manuals and pedal.
