Gotse Delchev, Blagoevgrad Province

Gotse Delchev [ ɡɔtsɛ dɛɫtʃɛf ] ( Bulgarian Гоце Делчев ) is a city and administrative center of a selfsame community in southwestern Bulgaria Blagoevgrad Province, with over 22,000 inhabitants.

The city was named after the revolutionary and freedom fighter Gotse Delchev; formerly it was called Newrokop (Greek: Νευροκόπι ).

Location

The town lies in the valley of the river Mesta, which is enclosed between the Pirin and Rhodopes. The city is located about 200 km south of the Bulgarian capital Sofia and is about 90 km east from the district capital of Blagoevgrad. The Bulgarian- Greek border crossing Ilinden Exochi is located about 20 km south of the city.

History

In the 2nd century BC was located near the Roman town of Nicopolis ad Nestum, derived from the search of the old name of the city Newrokop.

Order 837, the region came under the Bulgarian rule.

2001 was opened the clinic for endocrine surgery " signs of hope " ( Bulg Символ на надеждата ) with the support of the Federation of Free Evangelical communities in Germany. Since then, one day support center for the disabled and an ambulatory care service to come.

A local factory manufactures toy inserts for chocolate eggs.

The FC Pirin Gotse Delchev takes place in the 2012/13 season in the First Bulgarian football league.
