Gottfried Schatz

Gottfried Schatz ( born August 18, 1936 in Strem, Austria ) is a Swiss- Austrian biochemist. He played a leading role in the investigation of the formation of mitochondria and is co-discoverer of mitochondrial DNA. Gottfried Schatz is author of over 200 scientific publications and several books.

Gottfried Schatz graduated as a student at the Academic Gymnasium in Graz with the matriculation examination in 1954. According to the study of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Graz ( PhD. Auspiciis sub praesidentis 1961 ) concurred stays at the University of Vienna and the Public Health Research Institute of the City of New York. After a six -year stay at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, first as associate professor, then professor, took over Gottfried Schatz from 1974 a professor at the Institute of Biochemistry at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, he from 1983 to 1985 headed. From 1984 to 1989 he was Secretary General of the European Molecular Biology Organization ( EMBO). After his retirement in 2000, he spent four years as President of the Swiss Science and Technology Council ( SSTC ). In 2000, his scientific autobiography " Interplanetary travels" appeared.

With his wife Merete Gottfried Schatz has three children.
