Gottfried Sellius

Gottfried Sellius (also Godofredus, Godefroy, Godofredi Sellii ) (* around 1704 in Gdansk, † June 25, 1767 in Charenton near Paris ) was a lawyer, naturalist and translator.

Life and work

He studied at Marburg and suffering among others, the physician and botanist Herman Boerhaave. In Leiden he was in 1730 then received his doctorate of rights. 1733 he had directed his microscope to the Teredo navalis Linnaeus, who had put the Republic in excitement. 1735, he came as A.O. Professor of Law and the Faculty of Law assessors to Göttingen. The following year he went as a Royal Prussian Privy Councillor and o professor of law and philosophy to Halle. Soon after, he went to Berlin, where he was in 1739 professor of physics at the Collegium medicum. 1741, he went from Berlin to Paris. In the meantime, he was again in Holland.

In June 1744 he concluded with the publisher André Le Breton a contract for the translation of the works of the metaphysician Wolff. At his suggestion, Le Breton in 1745 acquired a printing license for a translation of the Cyclopaedia. However, with the second translator, John Mills, it came to a fight.
