Gottfried von Hohenlohe

Gottfried von Hohenlohe (* 1265, † November 5, 1309 in Bad Mergentheim ) was the 14th Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. He was the son of force of Hohenlohe and will Borg of Wertheim. His ancestors include a former Grand Master Heinrich von Hohenlohe, a brother of his grandfather.

Gottfried was chosen after the expulsion of the Order from the Holy Land on May 3, 1297 in Venice. Quickly, he was embroiled in the conflict between the Order and the Bishop of Riga. Bishop Johannes von Schwerin died in 1300 in Rome, wanted to settle the dispute as Pope Boniface VIII. The loss of the possessions of the Order in Venice and Naples in 1303 led to his downfall: on October 18, 1303, he signed his resignation in Elbing. He got the Deutschordensballei Franks and retired to Mergentheim. The procedure was not without controversy within the Order, especially since he soon recanted his resignation. He was regarded as a Grand Master by many knights until his death in 1309. He was buried in Marburg.
