Gotthilf Hempel

God Help Hempel ( born March 8, 1929 in Göttingen ) is a German marine biologist and professor. Throughout his life he founded several institutions and magazines, gained two doctoral degrees, spent more than 1,000 days on research vessels, was the author of several books and supervised more than 70 doctoral candidates doctoral with him.

He studied biology and geology at the University of Mainz and Heidelberg. In 1967 he became professor of fisheries biology at the Institute of Oceanography at the University of Kiel, where he for several years held the post of Director. In 1981, he was the founder of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, where he remained as the first director of the institute until 1992. In 1982, he also became director of the Institute for Polar Ecology, University of Kiel. In Bremerhaven, he initiated the construction of the research vessel Polarstern. As a member of the Science Council he was involved in the redesign of the scientific landscape in the new federal states. Within the framework of international projects he is strongly committed to the development of marine science in developing countries. In 1992, he eventually became the first director of the newly established Center for Tropical Marine Ecology at the University of Bremen and Director of the Institute for Baltic Sea Research in Rostock- Warnemünde. In 1993 he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and finally retired in 1994 but is still active in many functions.
