Gottlieb Stephanie

Johann Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger (* February 19, 1741 in Breslau, † 23 January 1800 in Vienna ) was an Austrian actor, playwright and opera librettist.

In order to distinguish him from his brother Christian Gottlob Stephanie " the Elder ", he is often called " the Younger ".

Life

Stephanie the Younger attended the Gymnasium in Breslau Elisabethinum. Rather than as intended to take up his studies of law in Halle, he entered the Prussian service in 1757 and took part in the Seven Years' War. In 1760 he fell into Austrian captivity. A few months later he joined an Imperial Infantry Regiment and was only after the conclusion of peace in 1763 retired from the army. He then spent some time in the rank of lieutenant as an advertiser in Augsburg before he finally went to Vienna. There he devoted himself entirely to his career as an actor in 1769 and joined the ensemble of the German stage with. Stephanie the Younger was also a writer of plays extremely productive.
