Gotye

Gotye ( born May 21, 1980 in Bruges, Belgium; actually Wouter " Wally " De Backer ) is a Belgian- Australian singer-songwriter and drummer from Melbourne.

Life and work

De Backer was born in Belgium and moved at the age of two years with his family to Australia. At school, he was the English version of his name, Walter, filed. De Backer is many years in a relationship with the Australian folk singer Tash Parker.

Along with some of his classmates, including today's bass players of his live shows, Lucas Taranto, 1998 he founded the band Down Stares. When that band split up, De Backer focused on his solo project, for which he later used the name Gotye. This is according to De Backer's explanation for an English transcription of the first name Gauthier, which in turn represents the French version of his Dutch birth name Wouter ( dt. / Engl. Walter ).

He is involved together with Kris Schroeder and Tim Heath on indie-pop trio The Basics of Melbourne. His first single from the CD Learnalilgivinanlovin Like Drawing Blood was released in August 2006. In Germany he joined in 2008 at the Reeperbahn Festival on, but also toured several times with his band "The Basics".

In July 2011 he recorded the song Somebody That I Used to Know with New Zealand singer Kimbra. He reached # 1 in the Australian and Belgian charts and was able to rise to the top chart then in numerous other countries. The accompanying album Making Mirrors reached in August 2011 in Australia also place 1 and was successful in many other countries.

Awards and honors

Gotye won the ARIA Music Awards 2011 in the categories of " Single of the Year ", " Best Pop Release " and "Best Male Artist ". He was also nominated regional nomination for "Asia and Pacific " at the MTV Europe Music Awards in the category in 2011 and won in just that category in 2012. The echoes 2012, the song Somebody That I Used to Know the "Song of the won Year " echo. At the ARIA Music Awards in 2012 Gotye won a total of five awards ( three awards for his album Making Mirrors - Album of the Year, Best Pop Release, Best Cover Artist ( along with his father Frank de Backer ) ) as well as Best Male Artist and Best Australian Live Act. At the Grammy Awards in 2013 he won in the categories " Best Alternative Album ", " Record of the Year " and "Best Pop Duo / Group Performance." He received the latter two Grammys together with Kimbra Somebody for the single That I Used to Know.
