Gouais Blanc

Gouais Blanc is an indigenous white grape variety originating in Central France (Ile -de -France, Champagne) is.

Dissemination

Due to the poor quality of the wines produced, it is almost completely disappeared from the vineyards of France. In 1598 Lorraine clearing of existing vineyards were already arranged in the year. The variety but held in spite of this and later completion of arrangements because it is enormously profitable. It also drives in the spring of late. The delicate blossoms therefore usually escape the spring frosts. In the 16th century the species ended up in Switzerland, where it is still cultivated today under the name Gwäss in the Upper Valais. Small acreage is also available in Australia.

Due to genetic studies of 352 varieties turned out that the varieties Aligoté, Aubin Vert, Auxerrois, Bachet noir, Beaunoir, Chardonnay, Dameron, Franc Noir de la Haute Saône, Gamay Blanc Gloriod, Gamay, Knipperlé, Melon de Bourgogne, Peurion, romorantin, Roublot and Sacy all originated from spontaneous crosses between Pinot Blanc and Gouais. In the Pinot varieties, it was probably because of the Pinot Noir ( the genetic closeness of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc makes a more accurate determination currently not possible). Riesling goes back to an intersection with a variant of Traminerrebe.

The success of these spontaneous crossing is explained that the two parent varieties are fundamentally different, genetically speaking. While the varieties of Pinot family believed to originate from Burgundy, the Gouais Blanc was brought by the Romans to France. In the Rebgärten of Burgundy and the southern Champagne both varieties were for some centuries in the Joint sentence.

From the same survey showed that the varieties Colombard, Meslier -Saint -François Balzac Blanc and all originated from spontaneous crosses between Gouais Blanc and Chenin Blanc.

Another molecular genetic analysis in the institute INRA in Montpellier by Professor Boursiquot has revealed that Gouais Blanc and the White Heunisch are two descendants of a still unknown to us the great grape Heunisch family.
