Gougenheim

Gougenheim ( German Gugenheim ) is a commune with 564 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. Gougenheim is a member of the Association of Municipalities Communauté de communes du Kocher mountain.

Geography

Gougenheim lies in the cooker mountain between Schaffhausen and pipe -sur -Zorn.

History

The name of the village was 820 first mentioned. 1474 Gougenheim was the capital of the Bailiwick Kochersberg which then consisted of 28 municipalities. The house of the executioner of the Bailiwick was outside of Gougenheim and was destroyed in 1976. The last executioner of Gougenheim married a daughter of the executioner of Sarrebourg, as was the custom. He died on 18 June 1808.

Culture and sights

The Chapel of Saint -Laurent was built starting in 1574, it is dedicated to Lawrence of Rome. The walls of the chapel are made Kalbruchstein and sandstone. In some places, the quarry stone was replaced by bricks.

The church of Saint -Laurent dates from the 12th century. The bell tower was later damaged in a fire. The nave was in 1749 replaced by a new nave. The front door was enlarged in 1843. The walls of the church consist of Kalbruchstein and sandstone, partly as opus spicatum arranged. On the ground floor two barrel vaults have been preserved as well as an ornate ribbed vault, but which is in poor condition. The lintel of the doors leading from the south into the nave is decorated with the grill of Lawrence. The walls of the interior are decorated with paintings of the Evangelists.

The Maison d' artisan ( craftsman house ) was built around 1681. This year can be found in the ceiling beams of the loggia. The house belonged to a mason or carpenter.
