Gourbesville

Gourbesville is a commune of 172 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes de Sainte- Mère- Église.

Geography

Gourbesville is part of the Regional Natural Park Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin, it lies 2.4 km east of Orglandes, 6.1 kilometers west of Neuville- au-Plain and about 30 kilometers southeast of Cherbourg- Octeville in the Bocage in the Cotentin, about 11 kilometers west of the Atlantic coast. The Merderet flows through the municipal area.

Attractions

The la Cour de Gourbesville castle was built in the 16th century. From that time, however, the entrance portal is still preserved. A pavilion dates from the early 17th century. In the middle of the 18th century castle and pigeon house were destroyed. Around 1907 the stables were converted into residential buildings, but burned down in 1944. After the Second World War, the castle was restored. It is now in private ownership.

The oldest preserved part of the church Saint- Hermeland is the choir from the 18th century. The altar of the church, however, dates from the first half of the 17th century and is classified as a monument historique since 1982.

Economy

The image of the church is dominated by pastures, bordered by hedges and rows of trees. This type of subdivision is called Bocage. The main activities of the Gourbesvillais are the breeding of domestic animals and domestic horses. Local leisure activities are horse riding, hunting, fishing and hiking.
