The former governor and current president of the Palais Palais stands at Onafhankelijkheidsplein ( Independence Square ) in Paramaribo, Suriname.

Here resided the governors of the law firm of Suriname and from 1795 until independence on 25 November 1975, appointed by the governors of the Netherlands.

Governor House

The first governor of the house at this point was probably built of wood at the end of the 17th century. A first floor plan was drawn up by engineer Tourton in 1712. Then the building is located with elongated rear buildings. According to the given scale had the governor's house a size of about 14,20 x 14,20 meters and probably consisted of two floors.

Around 1730, Governor Carel Emilius Henry de Cheusses the house completely re-build on a base of bricks and probably expand spatially to its present width.

In a painting by Frederik hunter ski öld from 1772, the building is shown in detail. It was with his gray coat of paint and about 10 small windows on the first floor not the gloss of a governor residence.

Around 1787/88 the building was extended at the front. It was built a portico consisting of two mounting positions. The middle part was a crowning triangular pediment bearing the arms of the law firm of Suriname.

In 1834, again was an engaging internal and external change through the cultivation of an open gallery at the rear side of the building. Apart from other minor changes had herewith the present form.

At the side of the square was built in 1911 on the first floor of the projection a large terrace above the entrance, which is also a Anfahrts canopy was created.

Presidential Palace

By the year 1987 here have all the presidents of the Republic of Suriname resides. Today it is the President for representation purposes, receptions, ceremonies and festivals.
