Gouyave with 3378 inhabitants according to the capital, St. George's is the second largest settlement on Grenada. It lies on the west coast of the island and is the capital of the administrative district of Saint John.

The first official name of Gouyave was Charlottetown after Queen Charlotte, but the name was during the French administration, as there are many guavas in the vicinity of the village, in Gouyave (French for guava ) changed. Later, the name should be changed back to Charlottetown under British administration, this remained without success. The village has its own fire department, post office, various shops and a few banks.

The people in this town live mostly from fishing and so Gouyave is the official capital of fishing on Grenada and is nicknamed " The fishing town that never sleeps " ( German " the fishing village that never sleeps "). In good weather, more than 30 fishing boats head out into the Caribbean Sea. The abundance of fish in this region is large, including tunas, barracudas and king fish are caught here. Attention was the capture of a 500- pound blue marlin. The catch of the day is either ( the U.S. are main buyers) sold in the fish market in Gouyave, in the fish market in the capital, St. George's or abroad.

Land and People

Due to the richness in fish every Friday, the Fish Friday ( German "Fish Friday" ) instead. This takes place in the center of Gouyave and is popular with both locals and tourists. On this day two roads for public transport will be blocked and then build dozens of stalls.

Every year on June 29 is celebrated birthday in Gouyave the fisherman's, the festivities include the whole city, also finds a regatta and a public blessing of the fishing nets.

In addition to fishing Gouyave is also known for another very important product in Grenada, the nutmeg. The largest building in the city, right on the beach is home to Grenada's largest nutmeg factory, which can also be visited (hence the nickname Grenada Isle of Spice ( Eng.: the Spice Island ) ).
