Govardhan (Mughal painter)

Govardhan ( bl. ca 1596-1656 ) was an important painter of the Mughal Empire.

Born as the son of another painter named Bhavānīdās, he was among the rulers Akbar (r. 1556-1605 ), Jahangir (r. 1605-1627 ) and Shah Jahan (r. 1627-1658 ). The surviving works of him show his rich and sensuous color choice as well as a painting style with soft shapes and realistic reproduction of the anatomical features of the Indians. He himself is pictured on a portrait of the painter Daulat.

Govardhan was one of the illustrators of Jahangir albums that are now in various museums in Europe and America, as well as the preserved in the British Museum work Baburnama, the memoirs of the first major Mughal Babur. One of his most important works, entitled " Jahangir celebrating the ex- Pashi hard " (established 1615) is now in the Raza Library in Rampur.
