Governor-General of Belize

The Governor-General of Belize is the permanent representative of the Belizean monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II As the Central American country as a Commonwealth Realm ( UK Commonwealth ) shares its state with 15 other nations, and this resides in Great Britain, will be the Governor-General usually its tasks. Since November 1993 Sir Colville Young is the incumbent.

Appointment and tasks

According to the Constitution the Governor-General Belizean citizen must be and is appointed by the Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister for an indefinite period. It can be active in constitutional affairs usually only due to the initiative of the Government or a Minister. The chairman of the party that represents the absolute majority in the House of Representatives must be appointed by the Governor-General to the Prime Minister in accordance with Article 37-2 of the Constitution. When a clear majority, he is obliged to appoint a deputy of the Party of which it is likely that they can unite a majority of MPs in coming. At the proposal of the Prime Minister, he shall appoint the other members of the Cabinet, but must be members of the Belizean House of Representatives or the Senate either.

The Governor-General appoints in accordance with Article 47 of the member of the House of Representatives officially became the " leader of the opposition ", which can unite the majority of the deputies of the opposition groupings themselves. The opposition leader is according to the Constitution of importance insofar as he has a say in the appointment of the members of the Governor-General in terms of grace advisory body (Belize Advisory Council).
