Governor of Arkansas

The Governor of Arkansas ( Governor of the State of Arkansas) is the head of government of the State of Arkansas and commander of the National Guard of Arkansas.

Current governor is since 9 January 2007, the Democrat Mike Beebe.

Choice

The governor is elected by popular vote. The term of office is four years since 1984 ( also 1836-1874, 1874-1984 only two years). Eligible for governor is who is at least 30 years old, citizens of the United States and is residing before the election at least seven years in the state. Immediate re-election is possible only once due to a plebiscite in 1992.

Vice Governor

The Office of the Lieutenant Governor (Lieutenant Governor ) was introduced in 1863, abolished in 1868 and 1925 re-introduced. The Lieutenant Governor is elected at the same time with the governor by the people.

Until 1925 the President of the Senate of Arkansas until the expiration of his own term Governor in the event of a vacancy of the governorship. This led to a rapid change in office. For example, William Kavanaugh Oldham served in 1913, only six days in the Governor's office until he was replaced as President of the Senate. In the event of a vacancy in the office of the President of the Senate joined the Chairman (Speaker ) of the House of Representatives from Arkansas to the location of the Governor.
