Govert Bidloo

Govard (also Govert ) Bidloo ( born March 12, 1649 Amsterdam, † March 30, 1713 in Leiden ) was a Dutch physician, anatomist, poet and playwright of the Golden Age.

Life

The son of a pharmacist first studied surgery and in 1670 the anatomist Frederik Ruysch students. He then studied medicine at the University of Franeker, where he received the degree in 1682. 1688 he was a lecturer in anatomy The Hague. Two years later he was appointed head of the National hospital system. He also held in England in 1692 at this position. In 1694 he became professor of anatomy and medicine at the University of Leiden. The chair he held until his death in 1713. Wilhelm III. of Orange-Nassau, governor of the Netherlands and King of England, appointed in 1695 to his Bidloo Leibarzt.1702 died William III. after a serious riding accident in his arms.

Work

1685 published Bidloo an anatomical atlas with the title of Ontleding menschlyken lichaams, German views about the human body, which was illustrated with 105 illustrations by Gerard de Lairesse. The book was later plagiarized by the English anatomist William Cowper, who gave no evidence of the co-authorship of Bidloo or de LAIRESSE. This led to an acrid dispute between the two anatomists, which expressed itself in various pamphlets to the particular defense of the two doctors.

Incidentally Bidloo was also a prolific and well-known poet, playwright and librettist. He wrote, among other things, the libretto for the first Dutch -language opera - Ceres, Venus de Bacchus (1686) by Johan Schenck - ever. 1692 published by Arnout Leers in The Hague An illustrated with numerous double -page engraved plates folio volume entitled relation You Voyage De Sa majesté Britannique En Hollande, Et de la Reception qui luy a été faite ... when its author Bidloo also applies. It describes a journey of William III. to the Netherlands between January 31 and April 1691 as well as the story of the Battle of the Boyne.
