Gowa was also the name of a kingdom in southwest Sulawesi, which was founded in 1300 with the center in Tamalate. In its golden era, when the Kingdom of Gowa had united with the north- lying Kingdom Tallo, the center was located at the mouth of the river Jeneberang. The area of this twin Kingdom was the origin of the present town of Makassar, the provincial capital of South Sulawesi.

As of 1660, the Netherlands was at war with Gowa, which was the main power on the west coast near Makassar. In 1667, Admiral Cornelis Speelman forced the ruler Sultan Hasanuddin, to sign the Treaty of Bongaja, who handed control of the trade to the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The Dutch were in their conquest, supported by the Bugis under the warlord Arung Palakka, ruler of the kingdom of Bone.
