GpsDrive

GpsDrive is a free navigation software for GNU / Linux and various BSD derivatives ( FreeBSD only officially supported). It uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the position. GpsDrive under the GPL. The program was originally developed by Fritz Ganter, a software developer and electronics. Currently, the project is managed by Jörg Ostertag.

Functions

GpsDrive works with GPS receivers using either the NMEA standard for data transmission or the manufacturer Garmin. Here, the GPS device to the PC (usually a laptop ) via a serial interface, can be connected via USB or Bluetooth.

The cards need to be purchased before the start or during the journey at different scales on an integrated download function (free). You can also import scanned maps using a wizard. The map comes from OpenStreetMap or Expedia. When navigating GpsDrive can automatically select the best (or the least scale ) select and display card. A simple zoom function for the cards is also integrated.

Waypoints can be stored in either a text file or SQL database, read and topped with custom icons. With the help of the program also free festival, the software also supports voice output, which can be particularly useful for navigating in the car.

About a daemon ( friendsd ) and a connection to another computer other people can see your position in real time and vice versa. GpsDrive can also use Kismet, a WLAN sniffer that work together to display the access points, which can be found at wardriving on the map and save it.

GpsDrive currently supported (as of 26 September 2007) no vehicle navigation in the traditional sense: The program does not have a route planner. It only displays the determined by the GPS position on a map, which - unlike conventional navigation aids - not "understand ". Will be given no turn by turn; Also, the system can not calculate alternative routes nor precise forecast the expected travel time.
