GR footpath

The GR- distance trails, French Sentier de Grande Randonnee, Dutch Grote Routepaden or long - afstand - wandelpaden, Portuguese Grande Rota, Spanish Gran Recorrido, Catalan Gran Recorregut are a network of long-distance footpaths in Europe, mostly in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain.

In France they are maintained by the Fédération française de la randonnée pédestre, in Spain by the Federación Española de Deportes de Montaña y Escalada. Some GR- distance hiking trails are part of the longer European long-distance hiking trails that cross several countries.

Marking

In general, the paths are denoted by numbers, but not follow a common standard: there are, in different countries of the same GRs, but not contiguous.

In France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain GRs are marked white-red. The diagram illustrates the French marking system:

  • White- red bar = GR
  • Yellow- red bar = GRDP ( Grande Randonnee de Pays )
  • Yellow bar = Petites randonnées for which the responsibility lies with the respective departments.
