Gracchi

Gracchus (Latin: the Beneficent, German pronunciation (IPA ) usually [ gʁaxʊs ], classical Latin pronunciation [ Grak ʊs ʰ ] ) is the cognomen of a noble plebeian family in the Roman Republic. The Gracchi were a branch of Sempronier.

The best known members of the family are:

  • Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, consul in 238 BC and military leaders;
  • His son Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, Roman consul 215 BC
  • Its namesake, Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, called the Elder, consul in the years 177 BC and 163 BC, † 154 BC, married Cornelia, daughter of Scipio Africanus; and their sons:
  • Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, the younger, tribune in 133 BC; 132 BC tried again to be tribune unconstitutional;
  • Gaius Sempronius Gracchus whose brother, tribune of the people in the years 123 BC and 122 BC

The Populares assigned the brothers Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus also be grouped under the name " the Gracchi " and author of the Gracchan reforms ( 133-30 BC) are at the beginning of the Roman civil wars.

The Gracchi were related with the Scipios, the Corneliern, the Claudian and the Paulli.
