Grachan Moncur III

Grachan Moncur III. ( Born June 3, 1937 in New York City ) is an American jazz trombonist.

Biography

Moncur grew up in Newark in a musical family: his father Grachan Moncur II was also a jazz musician. Grachan III. studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at the Juilliard School Music. During his studies he worked in the jazz department of the record label ABC - Paramount. Between 1961 and 1963 he was a member of the band by Ray Charles and recorded with Art Farmer and Benny Golson. He then settled in New York to play with Jackie McLean, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins, as well as with his own band (including with Bobby Hutcherson and Tony Williams) free jazz, but which is clearly oriented to his idol JJ Johnson. With the latter two, as well as Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan, he recorded the first album under his own name on November 21, 1963 Blue Note Records evolution. Shortly before, he was at McLean's album Destination ... Out! significantly involved. A second album, Some Other Stuff, followed in 1964. Subsequently ( 1967-1969 ) he was a member of the groups of Archie Shepp, with whom he recorded such as the album The Way Ahead and worked as a composer, but also played in the 360 Degree Music Experience the drummer Beaver Harris, Marion Brown and Dave Burrell. The Jazz Composer's Orchestra in 1974, he took the plate echoes of Prayer on. He then worked as a teacher in Newark, where he played with organist John Patton. More pictures were taken with Frank Lowe, Butch Morris, Jamal Khan, Sunny Murray, William Parker and Cassandra Wilson. In 1986, he was with the Paris Reunion Band on tour in Europe. In 2004, he released his album exploration with an octet, which included Tim Hagans and Gary Bartz.
