Gradac, Split-Dalmatia County

Gradac is a municipality with 3,261 inhabitants ( 2011 census ) in the Split- Dalmatia in Croatia.

The municipality Gradac also belong the northern towns Drvenik ( with Ferry to the island of Hvar), Zaostrog, Podaca and Brist. It is located almost exactly halfway between Split and Dubrovnik. Gradac is the southernmost town of Makarska Riviera and is known for the longest beach of the region, which stretches for about six kilometers.

Geography

The town of Gradac is situated on a small promontory, on both sides extend elongated pebble beaches. South of the headland, the center attracts with its waterfront along the Bay Vodice. North of the headland of the bay Bosac begins with its beach promenade. This promenade extends along the Labineca past down to the villages and Brist Podaca.

History

Previously, the site was mentioned as Labineca and he was away from the ocean on a mountainside. A fortress, which was here about 300 years ago, gave the place its present name.

In many Slavic languages ​​means "degree" castle or fortress. Gradec (or Gradac ) is a small fortress. One of the better known examples is the city of Graz ( Austria ) which was originally a Slavic settlement.

The community was largely destroyed by Italian troops during World War II and then rebuilt.

Economy

Main source of income is agriculture, fish and olive growing, but also the tourism ( the first hotel was opened in 1919 ).
