Graeme Koehne

Graeme Koehne ( born August 3, 1956 in Adelaide ) is an Australian composer of classical music and a teacher of composition at the University of Adelaide in Australia. He is known for his orchestral and ballet music, characterized by a direct communicative style and tonality are embracing. His orchestral trilogy Unchained Melody, Powerhouse and Elevator music have allusion to music of Hollywood and cartoons, popular Latin music and other dance music. In his music the " maligned and misunderstood " work of Les Baxter, Nelson Riddle, Henry Mancini and John Barry exert an influence.

Life

Koehne was born in Adelaide, South Australia. His bachelor and master studies he finished at the University of Adelaide. He first studied with Richard Meale, then he is directly and anti-modern at Yale University with Louis Andriessen and Jacob Druckman and privately with Virgil Thomson, whose influence can be noted immediately by the style of his next works radically simplified.

In 1986 he returned to Australia and was never lecturer in composition at the Elder Conservatorium of Music.

He is one of the most respected and successful Australian composer. In his work he combines the diverse influences. In addition to the traditional classical music, which he ruled as a result of thorough training, he is not afraid to let also incorporate popular music such as film music and jazz into his compositions. His hard work its toes is usually referred to as postmodern.
