Graham Haynes

Graham Brentley Haynes ( born September 16, 1960 in Queens, New York City ) is an American jazz musician (cornet, trumpet, composition).

Life and work

Haynes is the son of jazz drummer Roy Haynes, by whom he soon came into contact with great musicians. With his school friend Marcus Miller, he gained his first musical experiences in school bands, but then increased to the drum set on the trumpet, with 16 years on the cornet, which demanded him a lyrical game. He had lessons with Dave Burns. During his time on the Queens College (1977 to 1980) he played in gospel groups. In 1979 he first met alto saxophonist Steve Coleman and played in his group. Together with Kim Clarke, Jean -Paul Bourelly, Cassandra Wilson and drummer Mark Johnson founded the two wind instruments, the band Five Elements, which initially played mainly on the road, in the progressive 1980s, but as M-Base Collective enjoyed great success.

In 1987 he founded, inter alia, with the M -Base guitarist David Gilmore, the band No image, but also worked frequently with John Zorn and Elliott Sharp. In early 1991, he participated in the album David Murray Big Band Conducted by Lawrence " Butch" Morris. Then he went to Paris for three years, where he worked with one hand, African and Arab musicians, but also with Ed Blackwell, Don Byron, Nicolas Simion, Steve Williamson and Rodney Kendrick played. He released the two albums Nocturne Parisian (1992) and Griot 's Footsteps (1993). After New York returned, he was concerned with the blossoming hip- hop scene and let the album Transition with rap elements and 1996 Tones For The 21st Century follow. On B.P.M. he merged drum -and- bass beats with the music of Richard Wagner. Since then he has been working with multimedia projects, written film scores and taught at New York University.

Haynes also worked with Meshell Ndegeocello, Vernon Reid, The Roots, David Murray, George Adams, Uri Caine, Bheki Mseleku, Rod Williams and Bill Laswell band project Arcana.
