Geography

Grainau is located at the foot of the Zugspitze in Wettersteingebirge and belongs next to Garmisch -Partenkirchen, Farchant, Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau to the seven churches of the former county Will Rock. With the Badersee and the Eibsee located in the municipality two mountain lakes. By a mountain fall about 3,700 years ago produced some wooded hills. History

Grainau was first in Freising land register (basic and possession book ) named in 1305 as " Gruenawe " which means as much as "green meadow ".
