Grainger County, Tennessee

Grainger County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Rutledge.

Geography

The County is located in northeast Tennessee, is in the north just 35 miles from the southwest corner of Virginia and has an area of 783 square kilometers, of which 57 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Hancock County, Hamblen County, Jefferson County, Knox County, Union County and Claiborne County.

History

Grainger County was formed on April 22, 1796 from parts of Hawkins County and Knox County. It was named for Mary Grainger Blount, wife of William Blount and First Lady of the territory south of the Ohio River, which later became Tennessee.
