Grameen family of organizations

Grameen Shakti is a company that promotes the dissemination of solar technology and the use of other renewable energy sources in villages in Bangladesh.

In 2007 the company received the Right Livelihood Award for services to the environment. The jury awarded the company for the " dissemination of sustainable lighting and energy and the promotion of health, education and productivity."

Grameen Shakti is a subsidiary of the Grameen Bank of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, the awards microloans. Founded in 1996, the nonprofit company is also supported by GTZ and the BMZ. Dipal Barua is the director of Grameen Shakti, which is now ( November 2012 ) has more than one million solar systems installed in rural areas.
