Granbury is the county seat and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Hood County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located about 56 km southwest of Fort Worth on U.S. Highway 377 on Lake Granbury centrally located in the County, in the central northeast Texas. The distance from Oklahoma to the north is 155 km. Granbury has a total area of 15.9 km ², of which 1.6 km ² water surface.

History

1854 Tom Lambert and Amon Bond led a group of emigrants, mostly from Tennessee, on the Brazos River in this area. The city was named for John Bell Hood, a general in the Confederate Army.

Demographics

According to the census of 2000, there were 5718 people in 2391 households and 1458 families. The population density was 398.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 94.54 % White, 0.38 % African American, 0.70 % Native American, 0.52 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander residents from the 2.62 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.19% were of mixed descent, and 7.31% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2391 households 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.4 % were married couples living together. 9.5 % had a female householder with no husband, and 39.0% were non-families. 34.9 % of all households were single-person households, and 18.7 % had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size amounted to 2.83.

21.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 25.6% 25-44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.4 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 83.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 77.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 35,952, and the median income for a family $ 45,451. Males have a median income of $ 34,625 versus $ 25,721 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,801. 9.6 % of the population and 5.0 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 4.6 % have children under the age of 18 and 14.9 % of those 65 or older.
