Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds

The Grand National d' accélérateur ion Lourds ( GANIL ) is a public French heavy ion accelerator facility in Caen of the CEA and the CNRS. The plans for the construction came in 1973, after the decision to build 1975 1983 first experiments were carried out. 2001, the facility SPIRAL (Système de Production d' ion radioactifs Accélérés en Ligne ) was put into operation, first Spiral 1, which was continued in 2010 by Spiral 2 in co-operation with India. It consists of a linear accelerator and a cyclotron for medium energy and also functions as a neutron source.

At GANIL especially exotic nuclei are investigated, which do not occur in nature under normal conditions.

Director 's 2009 Sydney Galès (* 1943).
