Grand County (Colorado)

The San Miguel County is a county located in the state of Colorado of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hot Sulphur Springs.

Geography

The county has an area of 4842 square kilometers, of which 59 square kilometers are water surface.

History

Grand County was formed on February 2, 1874 from parts of Summit County and included land on the western and northern state border, which today is one of Moffat County and Routt County. As Routt County was established on January 29, 1877, Grand County shrank to its present western border. As valuable minerals in North Park were found, Grand County claimed the area as well as Larimer County. It took a decision of the Colorado Supreme Court in 1886 to declare North Park to a part of Larimer County. So finally the northern boundary was fixed.

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,442 people in the county. There were 5,075 households and 3,217 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 95.15 percent White, 0.48 percent African American, 0.43 percent Native American, 0.68 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 2.00 percent from other races groups; 1.15 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.36 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,075 households out of which 28.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.7 percent were married couples living together, 5.2 percent were single mothers. 36.6 percent were non-families. 24.8 percent of all households and 4.8 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.85.

Based on the county the population was spread from 21.8 percent population under 18 years, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 34.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 7.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 112.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 115.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 47,759, and the median income for a family was $ 55,217. Males have a median income of $ 34,861, women $ 26,445. The per capita income was $ 25,198. 7.3 percent of the population and 5.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. Among them were 7.9 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 6.1 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
