Grand Duke's Official Birthday

The Luxembourg National Day is celebrated every year on June 23.

Since the end of the 18th century there was a tradition to celebrate the birthday of the current ruler.

Although William III was born on February 17, 1850 this holiday was laid on June 17, his wife's birthday, Queen Sophie. This because of the proximity to the anniversary of the death of his brother, Prince Alexander, who died on 20 February 1848.

Under the reign of the Grand Duchess Charlotte the celebration fell on 23 January, so in the middle of the winter.

Therefore, in 1961 - from a purely climatic reasons - decided to move the United duchesses birthday on June 23. This date was also retained as Grand Duke Jean on November 12, 1964 ascended the throne, probably because it was the eve of his feast day, Jean (John ), which is celebrated on 24 June.

Even under the current Grand Duke Henri, the date still valid, even if it be not directly related to the monarch has more.
