Grand Duke Nicholas Constantinovich of Russia

Grand Duke Nicholas Konstantinovich Romanov (born 2 Februarjul / February 14 1850greg in Saint Petersburg, .. .. † 14 Januarjul / January 27 1918greg in Tashkent ) was a member of the house of Romanov -Holstein -Gottorp.

Life

Nikolai was the eldest son of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich Romanov (1827-1892) and his wife Princess Alexandra of Saxe- Altenburg (1830-1911) ( Grand Duchess Alexandra Romanova Iosifowna ), daughter of Duke Joseph of Saxe- Altenburg and Princess Amalie of Wurttemberg. Nikolai Konstantinovich went to the Military Academy in St. Petersburg and later became a gifted officer of the Russian army. He was also known as an incorrigible womanizer. Among his amours was also Fanny Lear, an American stage actress. Together with his lover he wanted his mother to steal the diamonds (1870 ), but they were betrayed and Grand Prince Nikolai was sent to Tashkent in exile.

In Tashkent he was under constant supervision and made a great contribution to the improvement of the local area. In addition to two channels ( form the Tsar Nicholas channel), he planned and realized he gave 1890 free a portion of his palace in Tashkent for the public to show his valuable collection of art treasures. It now belongs to the State Museum.

Grand Duke Nicholas Konstantinovich Romanov married in 1882 in Orenburg in morganatic marriage Nadejda Alexandrovna Dreyer ( 1861-1929 ). From the marriage were two sons, Prince Romanovsky - Iskander Artemi Nikolaiewitsch (1883-1919) and Alexander Romanovsky - Iskander Nikolaiewitsch Prince (1889-1957), out. From two other affairs, with Alexandra Abaza and Daria Eliseiewna, he had five more children.

On January 27, the Grand Duke Nicholas died in 1918 and was, despite the revolution, buried with a state funeral at St. Georgi Cathedral in Tashkent. Under the Soviet regime, the cathedral was demolished.
