The Grand Gulf Nuclear Power Plant (English Grand Gulf Nuclear Generating Station ) is a nuclear power plant with a boiling water reactor, which was built by General Electric. The nuclear power plant is located near Port Gibson in Claiborne County in the U.S. state of Mississippi on the east bank of the Mississippi River.

History

The reactor at Grand Gulf is the largest boiling water reactor in the USA, the owner is Entergy. Construction began on September 4, 1974. The reactor was put into operation on 20 October 1984. It is cooled by two lakes and in addition by a 158 -meter high cooling tower. Originally, two blocks under construction. The second block was not completed in the energy economy of the United States and high construction costs due to a different strategy. 1979, the construction was interrupted.

In 2002, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved for the reactor, a net performance increase of 1.7% from 1210 MW to 1232 MW. An application for renewal of the operating license by 20 years was announced by the operator and is (as of October 2012) in preparation. The plant has (as of October 2012) an operating license until 2024.

Since 22 September 2005, planned to build at the site as part of the Nuclear Power 2010 program a Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor ( ESBWR ), this is an advanced boiling water reactor from General Electric. On 27 February 2008 Entergy applied for a combined construction and operating license and on 9 January 2009, an interruption of the approval process to evaluate alternative reactor technologies new.
