Grand-Popo

Department

Grand- Popo is a town with 40 335 inhabitants ( 2002) in the southwest of Benin.

It is located in the department of Mono on the Atlantic coast and on the border with Togo.

The original Portuguese trading post served for a long time the slave trade and experienced from 1899 to 1960, the French colonial period ( French West Africa).

In spite of increasing coastal erosion of sandy beaches, which has already led to greater erosion of older districts, the city is growing. Source of income is in addition to the fishing, tourism, like Cotonou and Lome Togo.

About the city was known beyond the pop group Grand Popo Football Club.
