Grand Traverse County, Michigan

Grand Traverse County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Traverse City.

Geography

The County is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is in the west about 35 km from Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, away and has an area of 1557 square kilometers, of which 352 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Antrim County, Kalkaska County, Wexford County, Benzie County and Leelanau County.

History

Grand Traverse County was formed from the 1851 Omeena County no longer exists. It was named after the Grand Traverse Bay.

According to the census of 2000, there were 77 654 people in Grand Traverse County. Of these, 1,823 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants living in 30 396 households, and 20,730 families. The population density was 64 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.51 percent White, 0.40 percent African American, 0.93 percent Native American, 0.49 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.54 percent from other races groups; 1.09 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.49 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 30 396 households out of which 32.8 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers and 31.8 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent of all households and 9.0 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.99.

25.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.9 percent 18 to 24 years 29.7 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 13.1 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 43,169, and the median income for a family $ 51,211. Males have a median income of $ 34,796, women $ 24,139. The per capita income was $ 22,111. 3.8 percent of families and 5.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
