The observation tower

The Grand Winterberg ( German Great Winterberg) is 581 m, the highest mountain in the Northern Vosges in Alsace, France.

The Grand Winterberg is located approximately four kilometers northwest of Niederbronn- les- Bains. The mountain range separates the valleys of Falkenstein River and the Black Bach. At its peak, which is constructed of red sandstone, a 25-meter high observation tower, the hikers is an excellent panoramic view of the North Vosges, the Palatinate Forest and the Upper Rhine valley across to the Black Forest offers.

In the 514 -meter-high saddle between Great and Small Winterberg ( Col de la Liese ) are a refuge managed by the Vosges Club hut " Chalet du Winterberg " and Liese, a Gallo- Roman, sphinx -like sandstone relief. Celtic relics are also found on the south-east offshore goat mountain.
