Grant MacEwan

John Walter Grant MacEwan, OC, AOE (* August 12, 1902 in Brandon, Manitoba, † June 15, 2000 in Calgary, Alberta ) was a Canadian politician, journalist and agricultural scientists. 1963 to 1965 he was mayor of Calgary, 1966-1974 Vice- Governor of the Province of Alberta.

Biography

MacEwan attended schools in Brandon and Melfort. He then studied at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and went from there with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. His studies he finished 1926 on the University of Toronto. Two years later he became a master at the Iowa State College. In 1935, he married Phyllis W. Cline. The marriage produced a daughter emerged.

Between 1928 and 1946 MacEwan worked at the University of Saskatchewan as Professor of Animal Husbandry and Director of the School of Agriculture. From 1946 to 1951 he was dean at the University of Manitoba. During his scientific career, he distinguished himself as editor of the Canadian Cattleman and The Western Producer. In addition, he repeatedly wrote articles for the expenses of Farm and Ranch Review. Starting from the year 1936, he wrote in a shorter distance books, which were mainly devoted his scientific field and the history of Western Canada.

MacEwans political career began in 1951 when he ran unsuccessfully in the constituency of Brandon for a seat in the House. In 1955 he won in Calgary for the Alberta Liberal Party a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. From 1958 he was chairman of this party, but resigned in 1960 back after a lost election. After he had been a member of the City Council of Calgary from 1953 to 1958, he was elected mayor in 1963. He held this office for two years.

On a proposal by Prime Minister Lester Pearson MacEwan was appointed by Governor General Georges Vanier for Lieutenant Governor of Alberta on January 6, 1966. He was proposed for a second time for the exercise of this office, and practiced it out until the appointment of his successor on July 2, 1974. According to this position, he served as Chairman of the Women's Canadian Club of Calgary.

Between 1966 and 1974, MacEwan was appointed by five different universities Honorary Doctor, every time in the subject of law. In 1975 he received the Order of Canada, ten years later, the Premier 's Award For Excellence. A college and an elementary school are named after him.

Grant MacEwan died on 15 June 2000 in Calgary. He was born there on the Union Cemetery to the grave.
