The Grantley Adams International Airport ( GAIA ) ( IATA: BGI, ICAO code: TBPB ) is located in Seawell, Christ Church on the island of Barbados, approximately 12.9 kilometers east of the capital Bridgetown. The former name of the airport was Seawell Airport before the company was renamed in 1971 in honor of the late first Prime Minister, Sir Grantley Herbert Adams in 1976.
Once operational in 1939, the airport was expanded and modernized several times and has now developed into a modern commercial airport with a high passenger volume. In 2012, a total of 1,970,853 passengers were handled.
