Grantley Berkeley

George Charles Grantley Fitzhardinge Berkeley (* February 10, 1800, † February 20, 1881 ) was a British Member of Parliament with literary ambitions and aufbrausendem character.

The sixth son of Frederick Augustus Berkeley, 5th Earl of Berkeley graduated from Corpus Christi College and the Military Academy Sandhurst. He subsequently served in the Coldstream Guards and the 82nd Infantry Regiment from 1822 to 1852 He represented West Gloucestershire in the House and was the author of several books.

A sharp criticism of his book ' Berkeley Castle in Fraser 's Magazine in 1836 led to a duel between Grantley Berkeley and William Maginn, the reviewers.
