In 1863 the town was connected by the Highland Main Line to the railway network. The Highland Main Line received in 1898 a shorter distance between Inverness and Aviemore. The older section about Grantown thus lost to verkehrlicher importance. Finally, the distance between Aviemore and Forres as part of the Beeching Axe in 1965 has been set .. A second station owned Grantown on which also opened in 1863, branching off from the old Highland Main Line route from Boat of Garten by Dufftown. This compound was also set in 1965.

The Strathspey Railway, a heritage railway, which already operates the old Highland Main Line section between Aviemore and Broomhill the station ( between Boat of Garten and Grantown ), is planning a reconstruction of the track on the section to Grantown. In February 2014, the installation of a new Brückenzugs over the Dulnain began to complete the missing three miles between Broomhill and Grantown-on -Spey.
