Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Granville

Granville Leveson - Gower, 1st Earl Granville (* October 12, 1773; † January 7, 1846 in London) was a British statesman and diplomat.

Life and work

Granville Leveson - Gower was a son of Granville Leveson - Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford, from the third marriage with Susanna Stewart, a daughter of Alexander Stewart, 6th Earl of Galloway. George Leveson - Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland was his half brother.

He was elected to the 1795 Lichfield House of Commons and was appointed Lord of the Treasury ( Secretary of the Treasury ) of Pittsburgh in 1800. From this post he joined in 1802 at the same time back with Pitt. When Pitt became Prime Minister again in 1804, Leveson - Gower went as an envoy to Russia to complete the contract, which brought about the campaign of 1805 against Napoleon. After he was briefly Secretary of State in the Ministry of War, he returned to Russia in 1807; he remained there until 1812. Subsequently, he was sent to The Hague.

Leveson - Gower 1824 Ambassador in Paris. From this position he was dismissed in 1828 by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Grey sent him back to Paris in 1830, where he maintained good relations with the government in July. With a brief interruption, he remained in this post until 1841, when he was replaced by Henry Wellesley, 1st Baron Cowley.

Granville Leveson - Gower, Earl Granville married on December 24, 1809 in London, her niece, Lady Harriet Elizabeth ( 1785-1862 ), a daughter of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire and Lady Georgiana Spencer his first wife. From the joint connecting four children:

Leveson - Gower had two illegitimate children, Harriett Stewart and George Stewart, with the married Henrietta Frances Ponsonby, Countess of Bessborough ( 1761-1821 ). She was the aunt of his later wife, and the mistress of the Prince of Wales and later King George IV

1815 Leveson - Gower was made as Viscount Granville to peer, 1833, he was elevated to Earl Granville.

Leveson - Gower died on January 7, 1846 in London. His son, George Granville Leveson - Gower, 2nd Earl Granville ( 1815-1891 ) was Secretary of State under Palmerston and Gladstone.
