Graphical identification and authentication

GINA ( Graphical Identification and Authentication engl. " graphical identification and authentication " ) is a software component of some older Microsoft Windows operating systems that secure authentication and interactive logon services provides.

GINA is a dynamic link library that is loaded together with the Winlogon process at system startup. It is responsible to process a key combination for the safe application (usually Ctrl Alt Del ) to check the username and password to accept, and start the initial processes for the user ( eg the taskbar).

Since Windows Vista, Microsoft replaced the GINA with a new component called the Credential Provider.

Overview

Microsoft provides as part of the operating system, a standard GINA library ( MSGINA.DLL ) available, which offers the following functions:

  • Authenticate the user name and password with a domain controller
  • Displaying a legal notice before the logon dialog is shown
  • Automatic login with stored user name and password, so that no login dialog appears. Automatic registration can be configured to perform only a certain number of applications, before returning to a password prompt appears.
  • Can log out of the user who is logged shut down the operating system dialog "Windows Security " to change his password, start the task manager and lock the computer.

Winlogon can be configured to use a different GINA library supports other authentication methods such as smart cards or fingerprint scanner, or another login interface provides.
