Grassy Hill Light
Grassy Hill Light, also known as Cooktown Light, is a lighthouse on the known as Grassy Hill elevation over Cooktown in Queensland, Australia, at the mouth of the Endeavour River.
History
In 1874 was built on Grassy Hill an unlit signal device. To 1882 there existed a makeshift beacon. The still existing building was built in 1886 as a metal- clad wood construction. Compared with the pre-made to date in the UK iron structures, this variant is recorded despite the threat from termite lower costs. The lighting, however, was made by a company in the vicinity of Birmingham, England.
In 1927 the lighthouse was converted to automatic operation.
Since 1993, the lighthouse is powered by solar energy.
