Gratiot County, Michigan

Gratiot County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ithaca.

Geography

The County is located just southeast of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1480 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Midland County, Saginaw County, Clinton County, Montcalm County and Isabella County.

History

Gratiot County was formed in 1831 as an original county of free territory. It was named after Charles Gratiot, an officer who built the Fort Gratiot, at the site of the present city of Port Huron.
