Graus

Graus is a Spanish municipality in the province of Huesca the Autonomous Community of Aragon and situated in the Pyrenees. It is the capital of the comarca Ribagorza and has an area of 300 km ² 3513 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013), of which 2600 Grey herself and 900 live in the surrounding parishes in place. The city lies at an altitude of 469 meters. At it Ésera and Isábena flow together. In Graus Aragonese language is maintained in the form of grausianischen or niederribagorzanischen dialect.

History

The first human settlement was in the range of gray already in the Palaeolithic period. First important historical event was in 1063 as part of the Reconquista died the Battle of Graus, where Ramiro I.. 1083, the town was finally conquered by the Aragonese troops under Sancho Ramírez. The place was awarded to rebuild and repopulate the monastery of San Victorian in Asan ( Sobrabe ).

Peter II (1196-1213) gave the city the title of Villa Muy Noble y Muy Antigua ( dt Very reverend and very old site).

In the 16th and 17th centuries the city experienced an economic boom time in the development of representative palaces (especially in the Renaissance style) reflected, which can be seen today in the Plaza Mayor and in other areas of the site. During this time, the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Peña was built. Since 1658 the philosopher Baltasar Gracian lived in Graus in exile.

During the Spanish Civil War Gray was an important local and commercial center.
